Hosted by Sun Coast Resources, Inc.
The monthly OHH meeting was held on August 12 at the main office of Sun Coast Resources on the northeast-side of Houston. The crowd of roughly 65 attendees, comprised of current members and at least a dozen new faces, was treated to delicious Papa’s BBQ generously provided by Travis Baughman and CSI Technologies, a Superior Energy Services Company. With OHH’s President Gary Brooks recovering from surgery, board members Richard Saxon and Lacy Gigout successfully led the meeting.
Ashley Price from Sun Coast Resources welcomed everyone to their facilities and provided a brief safety moment. She was followed by our lunch sponsor, Travis Baughman from CSI Technologies who gave us an overview of his company, CSI Technologies – an engineering consulting and laboratory focused on improving well cementing in the industry.
The August financial update revealed that through July, 30 recipients have been helped by nearly $298,000 in 2015. In the past 11 years, OHH has contributed over $3,000,000 to upstream families needing assistance. We are on track to possibly double the totals from 2014. The Selection Committee reviewed another four applications for assistance at their August meeting held just this week.
Terri Wadley provided a recap of the 2nd Annual OHH Recipient Picnic held at Bear Creek Park in Houston on July 12th. This picnic is an opportunity for past award recipients and current OHH members to meet, introduce family members and simply share fellowship. Generous sponsors provided ice cream, hamburgers and all the fixings to the guest. The kids… even the big kids enjoyed face painting, a water slide, dunking booth, petting zoo and pony rides. Those recipients in attendance graciously shared their stories demonstrating why OHH’s efforts are so important in the lives of those that need a helping hand. No one ever expects to need help but when a crisis arises, OHH extends its hand in assistance. The only way it can continue to do that is through your participation and the generosity of our sponsors!
Updates on past recipients, Terry Edwards and Steve Spitzenberger were also provided – both gentlemen continue to improve, much to the delight of the organization. Cards were circulated for everyone’s signature and will be sent to both Terry and Steve.
After running through the administrative slides, upcoming events were covered for each OHH chapter. For Houston, we can look forward to the Golf Tournament and Happy Hour/Social in September, the Fall Clay Shoot in October and the Pistol Shoot in January. Oklahoma and the Rocky Mountains both have their Sporting Clays Shoots in September. The Rocky Mountains also has a Bowling and Billiards Bash scheduled for early December. The Permian is looking forward to hosing their Sporting Clays Shoot in October. If you happen to be in the area or have friends in offices in those cities, make sure to get involved in those chapter’s events – the support would be greatly appreciated!
Darryl Swilley stepped forward to fill us in on the success of the 11th Annual OHH Saltwater Fishing Tournament held last week in Port O’Connor, Texas. From all indications, the event was a big success despite the downturn in the industry. Early estimates tally the number of fisherman at 300 with over $100,000 raised. We’ll have more on the SWFT in the next few days. The kids from the Bluebonnet Youth Ranch also benefited from the SWFT – they spent time on the water fishing, received backpacks and a tournament t-shirt and will feast on the weighed fish for days to come! A big thanks to Premiere for covering the cost of the kids’ weekend!
It was announced that in order to make the 10th Anniversary OHH Fieldwood Energy Golf Tournament bigger and better, the T-Off Gala has been postponed until 2016. That way, all sponsorship can be funneled to the golf event. There are only 12 team-entries available and the consensus is that those will be gone in the next few days. If you are planning to play – we suggest registering now! Sean O’Neill and his committee are still looking for live auction and ditty bag items – if you can help, let him know.
Rich Orr presented the information on the Tenth Annual OHH Fall Sporting Clays Tournament. Online registration opens on August 15th with the event taking place at Westside on October 9th. Several levels of sponsorship are still available and there’s room for your team of five to get involved!
Jim Adams followed with an update on the 2016 OHH Pistol Shoot to be held in Conroe on January 29th. It’s time to organize committee and event volunteers. If you are interested in helping out – make sure to get in touch with Jim or Oakland Husband.
From pistols to the Gun Raffle, Mona Ansley provided an update on the sale of raffle tickets for the two guns we’ll be drawing for at the Houston Spring Clays shoot in 2016. Les Baer donated a 1911, .45 caliber pistol in a shadow box that retails for $6,355 for which we’ve sold 102 tickets. Caesar Guerini has donated a 12 gauge shotgun with 32” barrels which is valued at $3,500 and 141 tickets have been purchased. Purchase a ticket to win the gun of your choice or purchase two to win both – the cost is only $20.
Our next Social Happy Hour is Thursday, September 17th from 5:30 – 7:30 at Bar Louie in the Woodlands. It’s a great time to connect with others and share the OHH mission. Drinks and appetizers are graciously provided by Anadarko, Maverick Drilling Services and Rigzone. Lacy Gigout encourages you to come out and make a great showing and let our sponsors know we appreciate their involvement!
It was then time to turn our attention to Social Media. Wendy DiBenedetto explained OHH’s initiative to get all members involved in using our presence on social media to create awareness, promote upcoming events and encourage participation. OHH has its own blog now available on the OHH website. We also have Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+, YouTube and Facebook accounts – make sure you start following OHH on one of these networks. Get involved by sharing, retweeting and liking our posts. Make comments, contribute photos, videos and blog entries -this is your OHH, too! If you have any questions, you can always submit them to Oilfieldhelpinghandstx@gmail.com (insert mailto link).
Meeting attendees were reminded that OHH has a Recruitment Committee that may be able to help you search for a job in the industry. Contact Mary Smith, Kelly Cook or Chantell Dugas for more information – their contact details are available in the meeting slides.
Kari Schoeffler announced that The Houston Club, has selected OHH as one of three charities to share 100% of the proceeds from the 2015 Charity Classic “Boots and Bling” to be held in October in Houston. Volunteers from OHH are needed to help with the event – silent auction items are needed, as well.
The Roseland Oil and Gas Expo has offered OHH another free booth at their upcoming Midland show scheduled for September 16-17 at Horseshoe Arena. If you will be in the area or know someone who will, contact Oakland Husband for tickets.
A few donations to OHH were mentioned – Halliburton’s Giving Choices program presented us with a check in July for $1,806 and Eric Berning gave us a $25 donation earlier this month.
Our appreciation was expressed to both parties. As Lacy and Richard wrapped up the meeting, attendees were reminded to keep your OHH Profile information updated – if assistance is needed, please reach out to Oakland. The next monthly meeting for Houston will be September 9th will be sponsored by and located at IHS 5333 Westheimer in Suite 100. Houston’s October meeting with be on the 14th of that month and hosted by SM Energy with lunch being provided by Saxon Financial Group.
And finally, the words of Dale Partridge, co-founder of Sevenly, closed the meeting. “You were born with the ability to change someone’s life – don’t ever waste it.”
